Born and raised in the Midwest, Max began his career as a painter when he was awarded a scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1977. An early period of work following college focused on the timeless Amish of Ohio and a body of work created with the Columbus Ballet Met.

Called to the east coast, Max spent the '80s and '90s documenting island life and exhibiting his work in New England, based from his studio on Martha's Vineyard. Although his work has carried him to many parts of the world - such as Paris, Mexico, and Ireland - for the last 15 years Max has taken his inspiration from the landscapes of New York State and the streets of Manhattan. He now focuses most of his work on the fields of the North Fork of Long Island.

In 2002, Max's Manhattan "Rain" Series was introduced by Bentley Publishing Group to the international art publishing market at Art Expo New York. One of the paintings, "Waiting for a Cab - Park Avenue," is still ranked in the Top 10 in overall sales of Bentley's large inventory of art posters.

Max Moran's paintings are luminous, capturing light and atmosphere in a way that quiets the head and feeds the soul. His landscapes, which he paints on location, communicate the moment and spontaneity of the scene. His style is loose and flowing because: "It tells much more than infinite detail."

Max currently exhibits his work on the East End and in Manhattan.
